Coolkenno History

This weekend, there will be a centennial commemoration in Belfast for the many hundreds of Irishmen who died at the naval Battle of Jutland in the First World War, which happened on May 31st 1916, off the coast of Denmark. May we remember young Peter St. Ledger of Aghowle who died aboard the HMS INDEFATIGABLE at the age of 20 years. The ship was bombarded by the German Von Der Tann causing internal explosions in the ship's arsenal ripping the battleship to pieces killing 1015 men out of the 1017 crew and sinking within 90 seconds. Young Peter St. Ledger or Sallinger (local pronunciation), son of Peter and Annie St. Ledger of Aghowle, was a stoker and would've been within the depths of the ships boilers when the explosion occurred. His remains were never found. RIP
