Coolkenno History

On the night of September 8th 1920, the town of Tullow was a victim of British reprisals after the IRA had earlier ambushed and killed two RIC constables on Dublin Road, believing they were hitting the District Inspector of the Police. Later that night, the military arrived, firing wildly into the air, thus driving the terrified townspeople into the surrounding countryside. The military, whether they were British soldiers or the notorious Black & Tans units, burned two premises; one on Bridge St and another in the Square. The raid brought much destruction and looting to the town, including £100 worth of stock from The Irish Bar. When the two premises were firebombed, the Carlow Volunteer Fire Brigade not only tried their utmost to save the two affected businesses but also worked hard to quench the threat of the entire street catching on fire.
