Another fine old picture of Coolkenno people long since passed. In this photograph are Tommy Timmins (left) and his brother John (centre), from Killinure, taking some respite whilst working on the land. Both were renowned sportsmen with Tommy holding an athletics record at Knockbeg College for many years whilst John Timmins played on the Gaelic County Junior Champions team of 1946 with St. Mary's Ballyconnell. Many older generations remember The Sports Field, beside Coolkenno Cross (Oake's Cross), kindly donated for use by Tommy during the 1960s-70s and which was used for many school and parochial sports outings. Both were also patrons and supporters during the founding of Coolkenno GAA in the winter of 1980 with John becoming the Club's first Vice-President; an honorary role that he would hold until 1991. This picture may have been taken in the late 1930s or during the 1940s. The elderly man on the right has not been identified. Has anyone any idea whom he may be? Thanks to Tom Timmins for this great picture. May they rest in peace.
